How many hours of your life did you spend cramming for a test you aced and immediately forgot?
I’m launching a public investigation into why we prioritize the “Assessment of Memory” over the “Engagement of Critical Thinking.”
My first guest is Tom Moore.
Tom is a founder, a combat veteran, and a strategic advisor. But before all that, he was a college freshman in MGMT 101.
In this first edition of hashtag#WhyDidIMemorizeThis, Tom confesses to spending 8 weeks memorizing the definition of leadership (along with the acronym “POLC”).
He aced the test. But when he got to the Army, did knowing the definition of “Planning” help him lead soldiers into the unknown?
Absolutely not.
One method prioritized rote memory. The other forced him to practice critical thinking.
We are tracking the cost of this failure on the Wasted Time Tally (https://lnkd.in/eancf5WB). Tom’s 160 hours are the first entry.

I want to know three things:
The Confession: What useless thing were you forced to memorize?
The Invoice: Roughly how many hours did you waste on it?
The Trade: What critical thinking skill do you wish you had practiced instead?
Drop your story below. I will personally add your hours to the Official Tally.
Let’s see how fast we can hit 100,000 hours.
